At least half of the furnished rentals I managed are leased to remote workers at any given time. One of my repeat visitors is a screen writer who comes to New Orleans specifically to be inspired and use the Milton H. Latter Memorial Library on St. Charles Ave. as her “office.” She swears she is more productive in that space than anywhere else – and that’s the beauty of work-from-home… it is what you decide it is!
One of my favorite spots for remote work is the Central Business District, where dozens of loft-style condos are available. Most of these include great building amenities; including party rooms and meeting spaces, eliminating the need to rent a shared office or conference room somewhere else, or hold a meeting in your own space.
The picture above is a great example at the Cotton Mill Condos. The “party room” has a full kitchen, media center, conference tables, lounge areas and restrooms, all located in the center of the courtyard/pool area, giving you beautiful surroundings and an impressive space for inviting co-workers or clients to meet in person. The cost? ZERO. You give a deposit, reserve the room, clean up after yourself, and get the deposit back!
Aside from meeting possibilities, it’s important to have quiet when you need it, convenience for daily living, and it can’t be emphasized enough that you need a stress-free rental with a responsive host, in case anything goes wrong.
Remote work demands full attention on the job, and property problems should not be yours to deal with.
There is one other aspect that sometimes causes disruption for digital nomads and remote workers… the lease requirements.
Mid-term rentals are not typical rentals, and many landlords will hesitate to lease for even six months. Most prefer a year, and month-to-month is out of the question.
